NEW Chinese Festival (grades K-5)

Journey into Chinese culture.  Begin by learning what your name looks like in Chinese characters, explore calligraphy, paper cutting and Chinese culture.  Play Chinese games and paint large bamboo stalks with long, green bamboo leaves using quality watercolors and paint beautiful Chinese bamboo and panda bears.

Follow Your Star Quilt

Choose from two different star patterns for this class. Irish Chain Star- perfect for enthusiastic beginners plus and up.  Star block combined with Irish Chain block and partial seaming make for a beautiful quilt; Tennessee Waltz Star (pictured below)- designed for confident beginners plus- combines star blocks with snowball blocks for a quilt that looks like it was curved piecing, but it is all straigh, easy seams. Identify which pattern in notes section of registration.  Material list mailed prior to class.  Cost includes pattern, instructions and voucher for one free visit to QNO.  If you would like more detailed pictures of the quilts, please contact Community Education at 763-792-6100 or email at rmickelson@isd12.org

Art Glass Plate

Art Glass Plate – Stained Glass Techniques

Learn basic lead, soldering and proper glass cutting techniques. Bring a decorative plate or saucer of almost any diameter. Plates can be etched, colored or pressed glass, or pottery. Plates cannot be too thick around the edge (1/8 inch thick max). It can also have minor chips around the edge, no more than 1/32 inch deep. Must purchase soldering iron (price ranges) from instructor for second class or bring one, a glass cutting tool (suggested cutter is $35) will be needed for first class, instructor will have some to demonstrate on first night. Bring a small, watertight container to hold a damp piece of sponge, another to hold a piece of cloth or paper towel damp with cooking oil, a sharp pencil and eraser. Instructor: Ken Fletcher. Cost: $25 plus $30 payable to instructor for supplies to first class.

Mike Lynch Minnesota Starwatch Class (ages 7+)

Bring a lawn chair and get comfy while watching the great celestial show, constellations, planets, star clusters, galaxies, and nebulae. An indoor orientation will be followed outside under the skies. Get to know the constellations The Big Bear, Cassiopeia, Orion, and the great stories behind them. Use large reflecting telescopes, including a giant 20” reflector, one of the biggest mobile telescopes in Minnesota for close up views of star clusters, nebulae, galaxies and other wonders in our winter skies. Receive star maps and constellation charts maps, websites, astrophotography, a telescope-buying guide, and more. Instructor: Mike Lynch is a meteorologist at WCCO Radio, has taught astronomy classes for over 38 years, writes a weekly stargazing column for the St. Paul Pioneer Press and has just completed his second book. Books and “Galaxy on a Gut” t-shirts will be available for purchase.

Whats New
NEW Finding Your Way in the Woods (grades 4-5)

GRADES 4-5

Getting lost in the wods can be dangerous and frightening.  Learn from a naturalis how to find your way in the woods with just a cmopass.  At the end of class, test you compass skills by finding a prize at the end of the trail.  Pick up some basic tips on how to survive if lost- what to eat, how to build a shelter, and more.  Instruction on how to properly use a compass will be provided.  No prior experience necessary.
