Watercolor Painting - Paint Your Pet's Portrait (grades K-3)

Make a mixed media masterpiece of your pet, or other favorite animal. Use oil pastels and watercolor paints while exploring how to draw and paint various animals while mixing colors, creating textures such as fur, feathers and scales. Learn about picture composition. Bring one picture of a favorite pet or other animal to use as inspiration. Instructor: Katie Eckert has been painting in watercolor for over 15 years and is a member of the Northstar Watercolor Society.

Great value - no long term commitment.  Pick and choose classes you are interested in.  Attend when you want - no limit.  Cost:  $78 for the wristband - save over $100 per session if classes were taken individually.  Wristbands are mailed out one week prior to first class with a calendar.

Zumba
Zumba combines Latin and international music with dance to create a dynamic, exciting, and effective cardio workout. These fun and easy routines feature interval aerobic training with a combination of fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body.  Participants may achieve long term benefits while having an absolute blast in one exhilarating hour of calorie burning, heart racing, music pumping, and body energizing movements meant to engage and captivate for life. No dance experience required.

Core/Interval/Strength Training
This combination class focuses on your core, cardio vascular health and overall fitness. Maximize time by keeping the intensity high through a combination of strength training, core and cardio workouts. Don’t worry about planning and implementing your own exercise routine, just show up and have fun while burning calories. Instructor: Denise Berger, fitness instructor with foundations in group exercise, healthy lifestyles and strength and conditioning. Location: MS weight room.

NEW Flexible Stretch for Every Body

Elongate muscles and loosen joints from end-to-end. Increase flexibility, and improve body awareness. Use a combination of basic stretching, Tai Chi, Yoga, breathing, and relaxation techniques. Wear comfortable clothes and bring a yoga mat. Instructor: Judy Kloos, advance Tai Chi instructor and wellness specialist, trained through the Arthritis Foundation and HealthWays Silver Sneakers program. Location: MS weight room.

NEW Open Weight Room & Fitness Videos

Two options will meet fitness needs in this new offering.

Either maintain independent strength training activities ( instructor will assist with proper equipment techniques), or, follow along with fitness videos on the big screen focusing on a variety of exercises: kettle bells, BOSU, core exercises, etc. Access to strength training equipment and videos will be available simultaneously. Choose whichever on any given session. Instructor: Mike Richardson.

NEW Nordic Walking
Nordic Walking provides a total body workout (studies compare 90% muscles used during Nordic Walking compared to 70% used for conventional walking)– no gym membership is needed. Learn the basics of this activity including: the history, benefits vs. regular walking, proper warm-up and stretching and what types of poles provide the greatest benefit. First session is required and then attend any or all of the group Nordic Walking sessions. Poles are required, suggestion’s on pole purchase will be offered at first session (limited poles are available to borrow). Instructor: Shelley Gunn.

BMX Basics Camp

(for all ages, must be able to ride a bike without training wheels)

Spend part of the day at Rum River BMX Track in Isanti learning about BMX pedal bike racing, the newest Olympic sport.  Camp covers BMX fundamentals including “What is BMX racing?,” racing bike types, terminology, course set up, and safety.  Receive hands on riding instruction and practice new skills on the track. Designed for beginners. Bring bike (maximum size of 20 inch tires with reflectors, kickstand, and pegs removed), full-face helmet (required), wear long pants, long sleeve shirt and sturdy shoes. A limited number of helmets will be available, please inquire at the track in advance 763-444-5429. www.rumriverbmx.com

Bonus! Riders are invited to test their new skills in an ABA sanctioned race at the track. Awards will be given in each skill level and age class. Instructor: Kevin Riedeman. A signed waiver is required and is available at Community Services (will be mailed before camp starts).

Golf for Women

Beginners and intermediate women golfers will explore the basics of how to swing, drive, chip, and putt. Learn the secrets of golf and take your golf game to the next level. Wild Game Cooking

Lucky enough to take that pheasant, deer, or land that salmon and wonder now what? Many people enjoy the thrill of the hunt or the rush of a tight line but interest is lost when it comes time to clean the game and prepare a meal. Discover techniques, tips, recipes, preparations, and other secrets that make game and fish meals favorites. Wild game cooking is not just for the crock pot. Learn some of our instructor’s favorite recipes as he prepares them for you, and, of course there will be samples so bring your appetite. Instructor: Matthew Doth has a background in education, biology and ecology and has hunted and fished the Midwest and Canada. Location: HS/red 112.

Women's Archery Basics

Join other women and learn a new lifetime sport in this non-competitive beginning archery series. Cover the basics: including identifying dominant eye, proper shooting position, aim, draw and release techniques, equipment care and where to take your new skills next. Instructors: Matthew Doth. CSI: Examine the Evidence (entering grades 1-5)

How do crime scene investigators help solve crimes? Find out while exploring the fun and fascinating field of forensic science. Join our team of investigators to collect and examine the evidence of blood spatter, latent prints, tool marks and more. Then test your investigative and scientific skills using a CSI take home kit as you follow the evidence to crack the case of Whoodunit. Instructor: Science Explorers. Location: BH C101

Confident Sitter CPR/First Aid & AED Course (ages 11+) (prerequisite of completing Confident Sitter or basic babysitting knowledge)

Take basic child care a step further in this small class featuring individual attention for each participant’s review and demonstration of skills.

Successful completion will certify students in basic first aid/CPR and AED for infants children and adults, an important asset for a babysitter. Learn to recognize and treat life threatening emergencies including cardiac arrest, broken bones, bleeding, choking, allergic reactions, diabetic emergencies, etc. Must be commited to taking the topics seriously in order to receive certification indicating mastery of skills.

Confident Sitter (ages 11+)

This newly designed curriculum includes information from a variety of sources and experiences creating a well-rounded framework for the new babysitter.

Learn skills to prepare to be a confident babysitter. Prepare for potential emergency situations with an overview of choking and basic first aid specifc to infants and children. Discover personal strengths and challenges as they relate to caring for children. Discussions and demonstrations provide an overview on how to interact positively with children, manage challenging behaviors, prepare meals and snacks, diaper and bottle feeding.   Cost: $65
